The community currency tourism incentive program is intended to attract tourists and result in increased hotel stays during the program window to assist the Kirkland tourism industry, local hotels and businesses to recover from the negative financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The City seeks to stimulate tourism, hotel stays and local spending through the community currency program, as well as raise the profile of the City of Kirkland as a tourist destination. The program is further intended leverage and deepen the impact of two existing City initiatives: the Shop Local Kirkland initiative www.ShopLocalKirkalnd.com and the Explore Kirkland tourism program www.ExploreKirkland.com . The City does not currently operate a tourism incentive program based on a local community currency concept.

The program is expected to function as a key motivator for hotel stays and spending patterns in the City during the less travelled ‘shoulder’ seasons and beyond. The community currency tourism incentive program will be staffed by  the City Manager’s Office (CMO), working with the City’s Deputy City Manager for External Affairs, the communications team, IT, Finance and Administration and other departments as needed. The Deputy City Manager for External Affairs, and communications and economic development staff will be active participants during the program’s procurement, design and implementation.
